Couples Counseling
Break patterns, learn to work as a team
Evidence-based counseling for straight & LGBTQ+ couples in Richmond, VA.
Inclusive couples therapy grounded in practical tools
Maybe the same three fights keep looping. Maybe silence is louder than shouting. Or maybe big life changes – parenthood, transition, job loss – hit the relationship harder than expected. In counseling, I give all types of couples a structured space to figure out what’s really happening underneath the bickering and disconnect.
Calmer, counselor-led conversations
Arguments shrink when each voice gets equal airtime. We slow the exchange in couples counseling, flag trigger phrases, and practice short pauses that reset tone before it spikes. With the pressure dialed down, both of you can explain what hurts and what helps, instead of guessing.
Therapy experiments to try out at home
We start with 2 assessment sessions. One together and one solo with each of you to map strengths and pain points. I draw from Gottman research, attachment theory, and plain common sense. You’ll learn doable communication drills, fair‑fight rules, and weekly check‑ins you can run without me.
Partnership skills that stick
Success means needing me less. You’ll leave each therapy session armed with language that doesn’t trigger defensiveness, a plan for next week’s tough talk, and the relief of knowing your partner finally heard you. Conflict feels manageable, intimacy returns, and the future looks like a shared project again – not a negotiation.

What if one of us isn’t sure about therapy?
It’s completely normal for one partner to be a little hesitant about couples counseling. My goal is to create a welcoming, judgment-free space where both of you feel at ease. We’ll take the time to talk through any concerns or fears you might have about the process.
Do we need to be married to get couples counseling?
Not at all. Couples counseling is for anyone, whether you’re married, dating, or just starting out. It’s about improving your foundation for a healthier relationship, no matter your starting point, status, identity, or sexuality.
Can therapy help if we’re not having major issues?
Absolutely. You don’t need to be in crisis to try couples therapy. In fact, starting therapy while things are going well can help you strengthen your relationship, improve communication, and prevent potential issues down the road. Therapy isn’t just about fixing problems – it’s also about keeping your bond strong and healthy.
